My name is David Newby.  I grew up on welfare in a broken home, I moved 47 times by the time I was 17, and I got laid off from my first full-time job at 23 as a newlywed.  I also was able to semi-retire at age 32, and I help clients to retire in 2-6 years (sometimes less).  How did I make such a quantum leap from poverty to prosperity?  By learning about money as an adult through educating myself.

I made tons of mistakes along my journey from wage slave to financial independence, and I kept asking myself after every new discovery or financial victory: "Why didn't anyone teach me this stuff?!?"  Hence, the title of my book.  If you're like 19 out of every 20 people, you're likely making the same mistakes I was making with my money in the past (even if you're a multi-millionaire now you're likely making AT LEAST 1 of them).

 

 

Before I go further, are you wondering why I have a website for pinoys when I'm puti?

 

If you're wondering that, I don't blame you.  I'm not ex-military and I didn't meet aking asawa while in the Philippines on vacation.  While I was on welfare growing up, my mom went to nursing school.  She read a Christian magazine article about the struggles of Filipinos under the Marcos regime, and her heart was led to minister to poor Filipinos that were suffering.

 

So, in the summer of 1984- during the economic and political turmoil leading up to People Power- my mom, my brother, and I lived in the Philippines as medical missionaries.  We stayed in Bagong Barrio in Quezon City, right next to the University of the Philippines campus.  It was a life-changing experience for me in many ways, but 2 particularly:

 

1. I was moved deeply by the generosity and hospitality of pinoys.  Many pinoys making $20 a month would go and spend up to $2 (10% of their monthly salary!) to buy us a marienda kasi we were their guests.

2. I fell in love with Filipino culture and told my mom that I would marry a Filipina one day.  I forgot I said it, but 11 years later I fulfilled my vow!

Flash forward to today:  I've been married over 10 years with my lovely pinay asawa, we have dalawang anak, and I'm falling in love with Filipino culture more and more.  I sing karaoke, speak "Taglish," love pinoy food (afritada is my favorite), buy barongs from the Philippines, play tongits, posoy dos, and Mah Jong, and play basketball with my pinoy friends.  One of my pinoy friends told me in the Philippines last year I'm a "reverse coconut" - puti on the outside and pinoy at heart!  I like that name.

 

I love the Philippines so much, my wife and I are planning to move "back home" next year.  I will help Filipinos start their own companies, and I'll be working with microfinance organizations to help fund small businesses also. So, now you know I'm half Pinoy by marriage!  Back to my financial journey...

 

When I got laid off from my full-time x-ray tech job in the medical field, I had only been married a year.  My wife Rhea and I wanted to start a family, but I was scared to have kids with so little job security.  So how did I make the change from laid-off off medical worker to semi-retired at 32?  How did I go from welfare to wealthy?  By learning and applying financial skills I was never taught in school.
